Job

Essential job functions: 

  • Supervises the Probation Department with two full time staff and over four hundred misdemeanor probationers within the County. 
  • Audits probation and pretrial services cases.  Ensures that cases are properly documented in the case management system. Reviews warrants, completions, and orders for consistency.
  • Prepares reports for the Court, State, County, and other stakeholders. 
  • Assigns and cross trains staff on caseloads and work tasks. 
  • Counsels offenders and refers them to specialized treatment and services at guidance clinics, health clinics and related organizations.
  • Provides liaison with the courts, local law enforcement agencies and the public. Attends court hearings, arraignments and jail inspections.
  • Discusses and answers questions from the court, state attorneys and defense attorneys regarding investigations and probation cases. 
  • Responsible for budgeting funds for operation of the department.
  • Responsible for implementing the community service work program for clients. 
  • Maintain a Pretrial Intervention Program. 
  • Other duties as assigned. 

Education

Bachelor's degree in Social Science, Criminology, Psychology, or related field and three (3) years of professional probation experience required. A comparable amount of progressively responsible experience can be substituted for the minimum qualifications. A valid Florida Driver's License is required.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the applicable laws, statutes and regulations involving probation. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with the general public, attorneys and judges.
  • Ability to counsel persons who are having physical, financial, alcohol, drug, personal and related problems.
  • Ability to supervise others effectively.
  • Ability to organize and carry out the job assignments unsupervised.
